Beautiful Music
Dante Piercing was born and raised in New York and moved to the Poconos, Pennsylvania four years ago. He attended Northampton Community College majoring in general studies. With undeclared major Dante views on school differs from most. Music can be self-taught, so why attend school to learn something that can be taught and something that is also a natural gift. With his love of music, Dante plays instruments such as the Cello, Steelpan, Piano, and Clarinet. Playing songs from Alicia Keys Diary to playing with the Steel Band during community events, festivals, and local eateries. His passion for music is like no other, his ability to learn and challenge himself to become better has no limit. This is his story!
What is your musical
background?
When I was in elementary school we had an assembly and they made us all pick an instrument. They had all the instruments lined up on the stage, and I chose the clarinet, but they gave us three choices, the cello, keyboard and the clarinet, which was my last choice.
What challenges did you have with playing the clarinet?
When I first started playing the clarinet, it was hard, me having asthma made it even harder to play. From elementary school to high school, I competed in competitions, and I entered into a competition in New York called ISMA. With entering you were told to work on a piece to perform in front of the judges and you had a year to work on it. Every year I would do it and based on your score determined if you could play with other counties. I always scored high, I mainly played classical music.
When did you begin to play the keyboard?
I would say my sophomore year of high school I picked up learning the keyboard. I taught myself how to play the keyboard by going on YouTube and I would pick a song that I liked and practiced. That’s pretty much it. I didn’t take it seriously until three years ago. During the time of me playing the keyboard, I also started playing in the steel band. The steel band that I play in is a non-profit organization and we mostly play at community events. My interest in playing the steel pan, it had a sound like no other.
How does music make you feel?
Music makes me feel good because of the way I listen to it. I listen to music differently than other people, I would listen to the same song over and over until I am sick of it. So, it really depends on the mood that I am in. If I'm down I will listen to a lot of RnB music. Music helps me communicate and express myself when I don’t have the words to do so.
Which musicians inspire you?
Instrumentalist like Charley Parker who is a jazz artist, I do lean more towards the R&B side. Artists like Lauren Hill and Erykah Badu also inspire me as well. A current artist who I am inspired by right now is Frank Ocean, I didn’t like his music until recently. I also listen to artists like Chance the Rapper, I like his sound as well.
