Joshua Sandoval Garcia was born in Harlem New York but was raised in Washington State and Pennsylvania. At the age of thirteen Joshua Sandoval Garcia moved back to his old stomping grounds in Harlem New York. Growing up Joshua Sandoval Garcia grew a passion for art with the influence of his grandmother. Joshua Sandoval Garcia’s grandmother had a passion for art, she specialized in painting and clay molding. He was given his first art set for Christmas. Art was an escape for him. It defined and molded him into the person he has become today. Creativity, motivation, and inspiration are what fueled him to become a phenomenal artist. This is his story.

Define art?

Art to me is the freedom of expression. I try to personify my feelings, emotions, and experiences through my work. I express my emotions through cartoons, different colors, faces, and words. This particular piece I worked on ways to conquer your demons and fly. This stage of my life which was not too long ago, I was dealing with a lot of negative thoughts in my head and began putting myself down. I realized that didn’t define me, and I refuse to allow any outside forces dictate who I am and my magic.

What is your painting style and what makes it different than most?

I started painting in 2014. I was inspired by this painter named Danny, and he had a lot of art and to my knowledge, he never really showed people his work. He gave me a little push to guide me to what I wanted to do. I saw how many paintings he had and I myself wanted to have that as well. I went to his house, and he gave me supplies and I painted a duck on this foam piece and since then drawing ducks have been a thing now. My first piece was three faces on a canvas.

What art supplies do you use?

I use molding pace, course stuff for texture, salt, gloss medium, oil paint, graphite, and acrylic

Do you wish to inspire young people through art?

I have sisters and I influence them to be free and to not be harsh on themselves. They always say they can’t when they can. I try to push them in a positive way to believe that they can and to tune into their own creativity and be themselves.

Where do you see yourself as a painter 10 year from now?

My dream is to be one of the greats, have shown in galleries in New York City and around the world. I want people to see my art and know it’s me. In ten years I hope I have enough money to support me and my dreams, friends, and family. I want to own my own gallery in Harlem and have coat drives for the homeless and back to school drives for kids. I want to really give back to my community.

Description of the painting: Black head with horns is the negative thoughts that are onto of my face pulling against my face and me holding my composure. This peace is called find your wings. The cartoons on the bottom are my inner child and feelings, all my emotions I try to show throughout this painting.

If you were to give somebody advice on life or how to start painting what would you say?

I would say to live in the present and live in the moment because thinking about what happened in the past can keep you from prospering in the now. Like a heartbreak that can impact you deeply which can cause you to not have motivation for anything. Accept things for what they are and have a positive mindset because you are your worst enemy.

What's Next?

I’m really trying to focus on having my own art show.
